1. Educate Staff on Cyber Security
An organization’s employees are its first line of defense. Educate staff on the basics of what to look out for, such as phishing attempts, requests for passwords or other sensitive information, or suspicious-looking attachments.

2. Secure Your Networks
This one cannot be said enough.
If it were your home, wouldn’t you have a security system in place to guard your family and belongings? Not doing this is practically an open invitation to thieves. The same principle is true in any organization. Ensuring network security is a must, so protocols like data encryption and disabling outside network access should be top priorities.
3. Antivirus and Anti-Malware Protection
It’s not enough to install these software programs—you’ve got to make sure they’re up-to-date. Outdated software won’t do you much good if newer Cyber Attacks aren’t detected.
4. Change Passwords Often

5. Don’t Make This Obvious Password Mistake
No, we don’t mean using password as your password. The importance of choosing a hard-to-guess password should be obvious to most people, but many go with easier ones. Hackers can easily guess passwords with significant personal meaning, such as dates of birth or children’s names, so try for something more complex.

6. Backup Your Data, Then Do It Again
Backing up your data can mean the difference between a 1-hour restoration of systems vs. recreating databases, client lists, and other records from scratch. Consider the consequences of a serious data breach—how much time would it take you to restore your computer systems and databases to working order?
Don’t want to spend time doing this every day? There is a wealth of automated solutions in today’s high-tech world, from built-in systems to third-party cloud storage. Depending on the size and nature of your organization, it may not be as costly or time-consuming as you think.
7. Test Your Systems
NASA never sends its astronauts into space without extensive tests and practices in simulated environments. It’s the same for Cyber Security. Whatever protective measures you’ve put in place, it’s equally crucial to run random security checks to make sure your safeguards are working correctly.
